Finals' Question # 1
Research one company from the Internet and describe their MIS strategic plan in 1-2 paragraphs. Discuss too the impact of this strategic plan on the company's management, competitors, customers and the company as a whole.Evaluate how can this strategic plan be applied to any local company in the Philippines. Discuss too the possible effect on the company.Include your reference.
answer:Aspire Systems, a Chennai-based, outsourced product development company, specialising in software product engineering services has developed an in-house application called ‘Marketing Information System’ that serves as a key driver behind Aspire’s marketing strategy. It supports all marketing and sales activities within the company.
By developing this application in-house, Aspire has been able to save on its IT Infrastructure spending. Deploying an application from an external vendor would have raised the cost at every business stage. The customisation cost in any application is high and according to Aspire any manpower addition in future would have only increased their expenditure.
MIS, describes specific systems that "provide managers with reports and, in some cases, on-line access to the organization's current performance and historical records. "MIS primarily serve the functions of planning, controlling, and decision making at the management level." MIS are one of a number of different types of information systems that can serve the needs of different levels in an organization. For example, information systems might be developed to support upper management in planning the company's strategic direction or to help manufacturing in controlling a plant's operations. Some of the other types of information systems include: transaction processing systems, which simply record the routine transactions needed to conduct business, like payroll, shipping, or sales orders; and office automation systems, which are intended to increase the productivity of office workers and include such systems as word processing, electronic mail, and digital filing. Ideally, the various types of information systems in an organization are interconnected to allow for information sharing.
The development of effective information systems holds a number of challenges for small businesses. Despite, or perhaps because of, the rapid development of computer technology, there is nothing easy or mechanical about building workable information systems. Building, operating, and maintaining information systems are challenging for a number of reasons. For example, some information cannot be captured and put into a system. Computers often cannot be programmed to take into account competitor responses to marketing tactics or changes in economic conditions, among other things. In addition, the value of information erodes over time, and rapid changes in technology can make systems become obsolete very quickly. Finally, many companies find systems development to be problematic because the services of skilled programmers are at a premium.
Despite the challenges inherent in systems development, however, MIS also offer businesses a number of advantages. Today, leading companies and organizations are using information technology as a competitive tool to develop new products and services, forge new relationships with suppliers, edge out competitors, and radically change their internal operations and organizations. For example, using MIS strategically can help a company to become a market innovator. By providing a unique product or service to meet the needs of customers, a company can raise the cost of market entry for potential competitors and thus gain a competitive advantage. Another strategic use of MIS involves forging electronic linkages to customers and suppliers. This can help companies to lock in business and increase switching costs. Finally, it is possible to use MIS to change the overall basis of competition in an industry. For example, in an industry characterized by price wars, a business with a new means of processing customer data may be able to create unique product features that change the basis of competition to differentiation.

answer: PNP is now adopting NEC's-Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS) as biometric technology effectively raising the bar in its crime detection and prevention. Biometrics is the revolutionary technology now widely used for both civilian and criminal identification security systems and crime detection work. It authenticates unique body demographics such as fingerprint, and enables an almost instantaneous identification. The PNP Crime Laboratory attributes the early resolution of several cases resulting from the use of AFIS. This includes the identification and arrest last year of the elusive "Pajero Lady" whose real name is Ma. Lourdes de Guzman - long wanted for a string of robbery cases whose victims were mostly government and military officials.
Two weeks ago, the PNP Crime Laboratory used AFIS and promptly identified two "chop-chop" victims whose mutilated body parts were dumped in separate places in Quezon City and Muntinlupa. The laboratory ran the fingerprints in their database and quickly ascertained the identities of the two apparent victims of summary execution. (

Together with its affiliates Orlandi Valuta and Vigo, The Western Union Company provides consumers fast, reliable and convenient ways to send and receive money around the world, as well as send payments and purchase money orders. We operate through a network of more than 345,000 Agent locations in more than 200 countries and territories.

Consumer-to-Consumer Service
Our Consumer-to-Consumer service allows people to send and receive money worldwide, primarily through a global network of third-party Agents who use our multi-currency money transfer processing systems.

We offer consumers a variety of ways to send money through Western Union, Orlandi Valuta and Vigo Agents worldwide. There is an Agent location nearly everywhere—from the biggest cities to the most remote towns. In many countries, we also offer the ability to send money over the Internet or the telephone using a credit or debit card.

We also offer consumers several options for receiving a money transfer. While we pay the vast majority of transfers in cash at Agent locations, in some places we offer payments directly to the receiver’s bank account or a stored-value card.

Walk-in Money Transfer ServiceMore than 90 percent of our transactions are still done in person where consumers receive the attention and expertise of an Agent clerk. The Agent clerk collects cash from a consumer and within minutes, payment is available for pick-up at an Agent location convenient to the receiver. In the United States, many Agent locations also accept debit cards to initiate a transaction. We are continually developing convenient and customized solutions for consumers in a variety of regions.

Online Money Transfer ServiceOur transactional Web site allows consumers to send funds online using a credit or debit card. Additionally, consumers can conveniently check the status of their transfer online.

Telephone Money Transfer ServiceOur Telephone Money Transfer service allows consumers to send funds by telephone without visiting a Western Union Agent location. Consumers may call a toll-free number in the United States or the United Kingdom and use a debit card or credit card to initiate a transaction. The money transfer is then available for pay-out at a participating Agent location.

Mobile Money Transfer ServiceWe are working with mobile phone operators in select countries to introduce money transfers that consumers can send and receive with a cell phone. Recently, we announced three mobile operators that will participate in this initiative – expected to extend the benefits of financial services to many of the world’s families for the first time. The first commercial services began in the second quarter of 2008.

Payout ServicesReceivers can typically pick up available funds within minutes of the sender completing a transaction. In some countries, funds can be sent for next-day payout, bank account delivery or loaded to a stored-value card. In a number of countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, Western Union Agents offer a bank deposit service, in which the paying Agent provides the receiver the option to direct funds to a bank account or to a stored-value card. Vigo also offers Direct to Bank and home delivery service in certain countries.

Consumer-to-Business Service
Our Consumer-to-Business service provides consumers with fast, flexible and convenient ways to send bill payments.

Western Union offers several electronic and cash payment options that allow our consumers to send bill payments on a one-time or recurring basis. Consumers can conveniently send payments for utility bills, auto loans, mortgages, financial and insurance service providers and government entities through our network of third-party Agents and various electronic channels. Consumer-to-Business transactions account for nearly 15% of our total revenue.

For billers, our service provides comprehensive and customizable bill payment solutions that help improve cash flow and reduce costs. In the United States, our Consumer-to-Business segment is experiencing a shift in demand from cash-based, walk-in payment services to electronic payment services.

Payment channels and methods of paymentConsumers can send payments over the telephone or Internet using credit cards, debit cards or through an Automated Clearing House (ACH), depending on the country of origin and the biller. Guaranteed funds for post-paid or prepaid services can also be sent in cash, and in some cases, debit card. Money order payment instruments can be purchased in the United States and Canada and used for monthly bills or catalog purchases.

BLOG 1: MIS

Management Information Systems (MIS), sometimes referred to as Information Management and Systems, is the discipline covering the application of people, technologies, and procedures — collectively called information systems — used by management accountants to solving business problems such as costing a product, service or a business-wide strategy. Management Information Systems are distinct from regular information systems in that they are used to analyze other information systems applied in operational activities in the organization.[1] Academically, the term is commonly used to refer to the group of information management methods tied to the automation or support of human decision making, e.g. Decision Support Systems, Expert systems, and Executive information systems.
